Anxious People

Posted on December 15, 2020August 16, 2022 by Grace Peterson

“The truth is that this was a story about many different things, but most of all about idiots. Because we’re doing the best we can – we really are. We’re trying to be grown up and love each other and understand how the hell you’re supposed to insert USB leads.”

The title is an apt descriptor of how I feel before reading new releases by authors I adore; a nervousness that mediocre new work will taint the memory of cherished previous books. After reading Anxious People I realize how daft I was to worry that Fredrik Backman could ever fall into such a category.

True to form, Anxious People shares one story and several at the same time – I think it’s impossible for Backman not to entwine his characters’ lives together in some way. It’s a story about a bank robbery and a hostage situation and yet it’s primarily about the fears that drive us and the emotions that can’t be verbalized.

I listened to the book as I walked around my neighborhood, often with a giant grin forced on my face by Backman’s descriptions of life’s everyday realities. Oh and the dialogue. The characters, their comments, and their actions make you audibly chuckle before you can stop yourself – which happened to me on more than one occasion.

In my professional opinion, I believe Anxious People should be required reading to end the year. Backman’s ability to capture the love and beauty of life in the same breath that he prods at its fears and turmoil makes the book like a hug for your heart – and what year could we need that more than this one?

Oh, and the plot twist? Too good.

For any lovers of A Man Called Ove or any of his other beautiful works, Anxious People will only increase your appreciation for Backman and his portrayal of our everyday emotions. For those of you who haven’t been introduced yet and want to read stories that remind you of the joys of living without losing the harder realities of life – Backman’s books will keep you busy.

I just hope all the people who saw me laughing alone on a bench will read this and understand that I just couldn’t help myself. Aren’t we all just trying to put USB cords in the right way?
