Big Little Lies

Big Little Lies
Big Little Lies

If you didn’t think that kindergarten politics could be life or death, then you’ve clearly never visited the Pirriwee primary school. This year, the annual trivia fundraiser night ends with ambulances and an accident. Or was it? As an investigation ensues, it becomes apparent that the children at Pirriwee aren’t the only ones not telling the truth.

Madeline is a Pirriwee Public pro, but when her ex-husband and his wife relocate to their suburb, she feels she’s losing her oldest daughter to them, a change she’s not handling well.
Celeste is Madeline’s friend, and she’s as beautiful as she is frazzled, but that’s to be expected with rowdy twin boys like hers.
Jane is a young,  single mom who’s new to the area and doing her best to support her son, Ziggy.

After helping Madeline on orientation day, Jane is taken under their wings and the three are bonded over a boozy birthday breakfast. What they don’t know is that lines are being drawn at the school and the three of them have solidified themselves on the same side, for better or for worse.

Moriarty does a great job of providing interesting characters that I found relatable despite our very different circumstances. I found their trials interesting and felt intrigued by emotional processing that felt organic and realistic. I tore through this book, finding it an intriguing and pleasant read. The plot was engaging but not overly suspenseful, with just enough omission to leave you constantly bewildered and craving the ending (which did not disappoint). If you’re looking for a quick, relatively light, mystery read, (especially going into the holiday break) this is the one for you.
