The Last Thing He Told Me

The Last Thing He Told Me
The last thing he told me

Hannah Hall and Owen Michaels have been married one year. One year of love and bliss, in spite of his sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey, being less than thrilled about her new step-mom. Then one day, Owen disappears and a note is dropped off at their door with three words: ‘keep her safe’. As Owen’s company is accused of fraud and police investigations mount, Hannah and Bailey form a reluctant team to find out where Owen has gone and why he’s disappeared.

Intriguing from the start, I was quickly pulled into Hannah’s story as she works to decipher the truth about the man she loves and the life he leads. I’d categorise the novel as “easy suspense”, not quite a thriller in the traditional sense of edge-of-your-seat, but it kept my mind working to try and guess what was happening and beat Hannah to the “reveal” (spoiler: I didn’t).

I’ll admit that the ending took me by surprise and I appreciated the “twist” development, but somewhere along the lines of wrapping it up I felt the storyline became a bit unrealistic. I went from incredibly hooked to mildly annoyed at how the drama of the ending was (in my opinion) overdone, which is unfortunate because there were many parts that I enjoyed. So while I found it a relatively interesting read, I wasn’t particularly captivated in the end.
